Frequently asked questions
It is tricky to explain Montessori in a short answer, but I’ll give it a go. It is about following the child, giving them back their independence and trust, and giving them freedom to be a child. In a world where society is so focussed on more, bigger and faster, the Montessori philosophy gives us a reminder to slow down, take it at the child’s speed and find peace. Take a look at my blog and Instagram for more information about Montessori.
‘Never help a child with a task which he feels he can succeed’ – Maria Montessori
Involve them in daily life. Most children really want to be involved in the daily household chores, but as adults we often stop this. I get it – it’ll take longer and they will probably make a mess. But that’s just for now. Putting in the hard work now will reap so many benefits for the future! Prepare to take it slowly, prepare to help them clean up any messes without any judgement or scolding. If you know its going to be a mess, its easier to accept it and see the bigger picture.
‘Follow the child’ – Maria Montessori
Follow their interests whenever you can. Observe them and really take time to see what they are interested in, or what skill they are trying to master right now. Then spend some time preparing activities that will serve this interest or skill. Sit back and watch them play independently.
I use a mix of activities that Maria Montessori designed herself, and other hands-on concrete materials in my collection (I love learning things, I can’t stop buying them. If I call it a collection it’s ok, right?). But Montessori isn’t just about the things she designed. It is far more than that, and I really do believe the philosophy is the most important thing here. I will not pressure your child to do something they aren’t ready for or aren’t interested in. I take time to get to know your child and find out what interests them. As a result, I have had feedback on how approachable I am, and how some of the children who have been very shy with new people previously have ‘taken to me’ very quickly.
Yes, yes yes! Did you know that when Montessori started her work, she worked with children who had SEND needs? At its core, Montessori is for everyone. If we truly follow the method, stand back, observe and create a prepared environment, then Montessori is for your child, no matter what.
It is a massive shame that our government doesn’t agree with what I am talking about and therefore Montessori has been pushed into the realm of the expensive. That’s why I am here though – to show you how you can do this at home.
