Since these children are older than the early years children I worked with at the Montessori nursery, and since I can’t cart around a whole prepared environment with me wherever I go… we have to think differently about Montessori Tuition.
My approach is for the children to create their own event or business. With my Tuesday group we are making a football ground and have so many ideas of things we need to design and make. We designed footballs this week and learnt about what is inside a football. We worked out the materials and how much each thing will cost and therefore how much the entire football will cost to make. We made labelled diagrams and will in the future sessions learn about writing, support for spelling, times tables, fractions, and much more – I can’t really say what right now as it’s very child led and totally their decision. Thursday group decided on an art show. They particularly want to make nature art, bracelets and the biggest smoothie in the world 😊. Through this, we will learn phonics, writing for a purpose, maths, money, fractions, shape and again, whatever else comes up in the moment.
But they aren’t just learning those skills. They are learning to have a love for learning, and we are creating life long learners. Because it all comes from them. Not from what someone else says they should be learning. This will in turn create so much confidence in their ability. And when this comes, the learning also comes so much easier. I am forever thankful I found a Montessori way of teaching, learning and living.
